French Institute Morocco, Artists Residencies. 2013

Le collectif 47, Fez 2012

The French Institute in Morocco is setting up artist’s residencies, and has just sent out a call for applications. The Institute has 11 centres in Morocco and every one of them has something to offer in this field, from Tetouan to Agadir, El Jadida to Kenitra, Oujda to Marrakech, Essaouira to Meknes, Tangier, Rabat and Fes. The Institute sees itself as a cultural facilitator between France and Morocco, and with these residencies that can be artistic or intellectual, it aims to contribute towards the professionalization of such endeavours and to give value to the country’s artistic activities both here and abroad.

Priority will be given to Moroccans, though artists and intellectuals from elsewhere, particularly French-speaking countries, will be considered. The mission is to bring attention to the artists who will enrich their environment and share their knowledge with the public. On offer is transport, lodging and a small per diem, and the residencies will begin in January and again in September 2013.

In Fes, the residency is open to multi-disciplinary artists throughout the year. It is situated at Dar Batha, the French Institute’s beautiful traditional house in the medina. It’s a wonderfully quiet space that is perfect for creating something special. There are several rooms available in which to work, and the artist are housed here, too. The Institute envisages this residency as being particularly relevant for cross-cultural work between Moroccan and foreign artists. Equipment available at Dar Batha includes sound, lighting, a Pleyel piano, a dance floor and an exhibition hall measuring 10x6m.

More information and application forms are available at and applications should be made, with supporting portfolio, before 15 November for the January residency, and in April for the September dates.
