LʼAURORE QUARTET and MOURAD BENHAMMOU

Aurore Voilqué- Violon/Vocals, Thomas Ohresser- guitar, Siegried Mandacé- guitar, Basile Mouton – bass, Mourad Benhammou-Drums.

Since 2004, lʼAurore Quartet, composed of two guitars (Thomas Ohresser, Siegried Mandacé), the bass (Basile Moutonet) and a violin ,(Aurore Voilqué) enchanted the public with their swing and energy, but also with the compositions and voice of Aurore Voilqué, a young 32 year old tzigane who practiced in the classical field before taking influences from Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli.  Mourad Benhammou is the invited drummer who for many years has put together events designed to highlight the principles of bebop drumming .  The evenings’ event is bought to you by the French Institute.

First Flamenco Festival – Fez, 2011.

If you are a fan of true hearty live performances then this festival is for you. Presented to you by the Instituto Cervantes is the first flamenco festival in Morocco. Monday the 4th of April hosts a conference titled the Origin and Evolution of Flamenco and the week of performances will commence on the 5th of April, finishing on Saturday the 9th.

 

Do you often wonder what to do with yourself on a week night in Fez? Look no further, zealous guitar repertoires, hot polka dot dresses and heart wrenching lyrics will make you clap and stamp your feet all the way home. All concerts will be held at the Cultural Complex Al Houriya, Ave Palestine. Fez.V.N. and promise to fill seats with buts.  The program is as follows.

« Alma de mujer », Lola Pérez

The 6th edition of Jazzablanca will be held from the 6th to the 21st of April in venues around Casablanca. Soul, blues, folk and latin Jazz pepper this years program that stars James Blunt, Bobby Johnson, the Buena Vista Social Club as the Grand Finale on The 21st.. Hammam. Hidden Door — Living Treasure

Hammam. Hidden Door — Living Treasure is an exhibition that opened at Fes’ National School of Architecture this week. The exhibition includes objects, video installations, panoramic photos, architectural models and documentary films all created to give insight into the history, the present and the future of the public hammams.

The exhibition shows architectural features, handicraft technologies as well as social values and intergenerational impacts of the Hammam, a part of the common identity of the Mediterranean countries.

The exhibition will be held from March 22nd to April 8th. Hours are 10 am to 6 pm at the Medresa Charatine Medina of Fes. HammamMed is a project funded by the European Union within the Euromed Heritage IV Programme.

Marche Maroc,Fez. Artisanal craft fair begins April 1st

The United States Peace Corps and USAID welcome you to the annual Marche Maroc artisanal craft fair in Fez.  The cultural market begins on Friday, April 1st, from 9:00 – 18:00,  Saturday, April 2nd from 9:00 – 18:00, and continues on Sunday, April 3rd—the fair’s final day—from 9:00 – 14:00.

Marche Maroc will be held in the open-air courtyard of the Cultural Complex, Al Hourya, Avenue de la Palestine, in Ville Nouvelle a venue within walking distance of Gare de Fes, and a short taxi ride from the medina.

Artisans from all over Morocco will presenting their handicrafts and wears made all over Morocco, Marche Maroc is a chance to purchase craft works not typically found in Fez medina,  directly from the makers and at fair trade prices. Some of the artisans will demonstrate their craft at the fair—woodcarving, couscous rolling, wool spinning, and a henna artist will be available for hand tattoos.

This fair brings artisans directly to the customer in a market that is often dominated by middlemen.  This is an opportunity to support the culturally rich artisan community of Morocco and gain access to fine examples of the country’s handicrafts.

Eric Vincent – rock or not?

Eric Vincent has a special passion for taking his music to every corner of the globe having performed in more than 140 countries. This coming Friday (18th March 2011) Vincent will perform at the Palais Jamai, Fez, (7 p.m) under the wing of the French Institute.

Although his background is in classical music, Eric’s music encompasses many styles. His songs contain elements of jazz, folk, rock and rhythms reflecting his travels in Africa,   and the Carribean and  have a quality  which identifies him as a singer in the best tradition of the chanson française. Friday night in Fez, is it rock night?
