Marakesh Art Fair 2010

From 8 to 11 October 2010, the city of Marrakech will be hosting the first international edition of a modern and contemporary art fair in Morocco. A platform for exchanges between art dealers, gallery owners, artists, collectors and amateurs, this unprecedented appointment has already seduced a selection of international galleries which will meet at the Es Saadi Palace.

With its new organization committee, Marrakech Art Fair is currently unveiling the major features of its event, which will take place at two large exhibition venues: The galleries’ stands will occupy the Es Saadi Palace to create an ensemble of the highest quality between East and West. Among the thirty participating galleries, half come from the Arab world, primarily from North Africa. The other half is coming from Europe. Settled in Paris, the JGM gallery will present JeanFrançois Fourtou, an artist who is familiar with Marrakech; the Hussenot gallery will exhibit Mounir Fatmi, but we will also discover the galleries La Bank, Guy Pieters, Laurent Godin as well as Enrico Navarra, among others.

For the occasion of the Marrakech Art Fair…
… the entire city of Marrakech will pulse with the rhythm of contemporary creation Along with the fair, Brahim Alaoui is organizing a circuit to show visitors the artistic and cultural wealth of Marrakech and, together with local players, stimulate reflection on art, as conceived by Arab artists of today. With the myriad issues it raises and the numerous artistic practices it presents, this circuit outside the Es Saadi Palace will also open the doors of foundations,
riads, and artists’ studios, inviting aficionados to discover locations linked to the history of Marrakech.

Moulay Idriss, R.I.P.

20 09 2010

The ritual ceremonies to commemorate the founder, ruler and saint of Fez, Moulay Idriss Al Azhar, started last Thursday and will continue for a week. Idriss, born in 793, founded Fez in 808 whilst residing in Sefrou. ( now thats a commute on donkey or chariot!)

The principal public spectacle is the procession of folkmusic, (Aissaouas, Hmadchas, and Gnaoua) and barakas (gifts) of animals to be slaughtered at his tomb in the heart of the medina that will takle place on Thursday 23rd, late afternoon, weaving through Bab Boujloud down through the medina.

A good spot for photographs is the roof of the cascade hotel or right at the feet of the crowd and cattle at Thamis Restaurant if your willing to keep your footing. Not for the claustrophoic spectator.

Living as a foreigner in another culture, very at home yet often an outsider, the artist invites the audience to reasses what is relative, acceptable,(un) fathomable or common to us all.
