Sefrou Connect. June 2010. seFest

seFest, an association for Contemporary Arts in Sefrou, recently orchestrated a public arts project with the Cherry Festival of Sefrou. Works from Sefrouiin artists and those inspired by the town were documented, printed on large format plastic canvas then placed on the walls and buildings of Sefrou town.
The power of the image was well recieved . seFest declares that the most rewarding aspect of the project was the response and pride of the medina population for displaying the works in their neighbourhoods.
More projects are in the works to enrich collaboration between the arts and Sefrou town. seFest is currently looking for Moroccan artists who work in installation to present their works in the medina of Sefrou.

This oldest Festival in Morocco, Sefrou’s Cherry festival celebrates 90 years since the first festivities to celebrate the once harvest of cherries. This year, the 2010 comeback of the Festival promises to stimulate and entertain Sefrou town and its region’s inhabitants. The four day gala of a festivities include a procession led by this years Cherry Queen, (5 pm Satuyrday)live music in the main square (10 pm Thurs/Fri/Sat), a fantasia every morning, poetry, theatre, clowns for children and a gather of local associations and craftpeople’s creations and activities.
seFest, Sefrou’s Association for the Contemporary Arts, has gathered close to 40 images of visual artist’s works from Sefrou or those who have been inspired by the ancient beber/jewish town. These representations are printed on large-scale supports and placed on the building around the medina and new town; a homage to the visual art that has derived from Sefrou, before and now.
25 kilometres from Fez the streets are being painted, gardens put into place, tents are being erected and the banners are flying high.

Another face of the Sacred Music Festival

10 06 2010

Fassi Rap

Rap on the fringe…..
Ait Skato, the free stage out beyond Atlas, principally caters to a local crowd. Not always platforming sacred music but none the less a worthy trip if you see how the other half live. Wednesday evening was programmed under the Sacred Music Festival as Rap night and that’s certainly what the youth of Fez wanted. Several local rap/hip hop bands performed to an excited crowd of a few thousand who waved hip hop styie and bunny hopped to the social and political expressions. The final act was performed with much gust and rap by home boys, Fez City Clan.
Word up!
