When the voices become loud

It becomes a noise

The bodies that become successive

are prisoners of wood

Their eyes follow your flow

Then you are the prisoner of the crowd

How can you weave between this crowd

through those eyes

Flow like a voice not mechanical, not nervous,

but poetic and soulful.

One morning we will stir the puddles

And transform them into a rushing waterfall

5 days of yoga practice to start the Sufi day

31 03 2010

Yoga / Fez

Culture Vultures presents Kristy Venrenga and her course of yoga teachings over 5 consecutive days from the 19th to the 23rd of April. In harmony with the Festival of Sufi Culture presented by Association du Festival de Fès de la Culture Soufie, C.V. invites you to start the day with 75 minutes under Verenga’s wing. The course will involve posture awareness, meditation, breathing and sound to enhance the ambient over the ten days during the Sufi Culture festival.

Kisty Verenga, American born, travelled and currently settled in Ireland, teaches Intergral yoga; a form of yoga originating with Swami Satchidananda from South India, who also founded an Integral Yoga Centre in the USA. Ms Verenga has studied yoga, self realization, Qi Gung, and Ramana Maharshi whilst weaving in the practice of a visual artist. She became a certified Integral Yoga Instructor in 1988. From 2005 until the present she has received Buddhist teachings and empowerments from Kenpo Karpo, Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche, Ringu Tulku, and His Holiness Gyalwang Drukpa.

Sessions will take place just off Talla Sgira, at 9.30 a.m. Monday to Friday, 19 th – 23rd of April.  The cost of a five day course is 500 dh and given availability, sessions can be paid for individually at a charge of 150 dh. To reserve a place contact Jess at culture.vultures1@rocketmail.com for more information.  Ist deadline for reserving a place is 15th April. Places are limited.

Fusion Exlosion

Jose Angel Hevia with his electric bagpipes

Hevia and les frères Akkaf at Houria Theatre, Monday 29th of March.

José Ángel Hevia Velasco and his backing group of female musicians, one on percussion the other a fine pianist, performed last night a fusion gig with les frères Akkaf.  It was a wonder to say the least. To begin with the Theatre Houria was more than packed, over filling the maximum seating capacity of 350 closer to 450. The atmosphere was electric before the performers reached the stage. What a thrill to see most of the public under the age of 25. Bravo Instituto Cervantes for this simple but huge accomplishment.

Hevia took the first set with their fusion of Celtic piccolos, bagpipes, bongo drums, flutes and grand piano. The audience were clapping along within seconds. The popular Soussi band, les frères Akkaf, from the south of Morocco and their entourage of traditional instruments and high standard performance got the crowd going somewhat more in the second set. Finally the two groups, who met only three days previously, fused traditional church songs, Celtic tunes, Islamic riffs and Berber rhythms.

An amazing feat and enchantment to be introduced to the similarities between Celtic and Berber music. What a joyous collaboration and an inspiration to see a youthful Fez public at large.  A standing ovation is such a great way to leave a theatre.

The Mawazine “battle of the bands”!

According to the online journal Magharebia, judges for fifth Mawazine Generation talent contest are zeroing in on Morocco’s up-and-coming musical talent in a first round of eliminations that began March 15th in Meknes.
Musicians are in hot competition for the grand prize: a three-year recording deal, help producing an album and videos, national distribution and the possibility of performing at the 9th Mawazine World Rhythms Festival in May.
Elimination rounds will also be held in Marrakech on March 27th, Agadir on April 3rd, Casablanca on April 10th and Rabat on April 17th. The competition, launched February 15th, has attracted musicians in all genres, including hip-hop, fusion, rap and electronic music.

Mawazine battle of the beats.

What C.V. want to know is why Fes is not on the map for auditions. Come on Fez, turn up the culture!!

Jazzablanca – Jazz Festival

jazzablanca

From the 7th of April through until the 16th, 2006, Casablanca will host an exceptional jazz festival. Great names of Jazz and R&B will include Michel Jonasz, Lamiela, John Lee Hooker Jr, Al Jarreau, Lucky Peterson, Manu Katché, Billy Paul and Diane Reeves.
For jazz lovers the line-up is pretty impressive, but there has been a move in this fifth edition to broaden the range of music and the move looks to be a popular one, judging by local press reports.
Our concert picks are: Friday April 7: Michel Jonasz, John Lee Hooker Jr on Sunday April 9, Monday 10 Tuesday April 11: Al Jarreau and the hommage to Weather Report on the 14th.

A Night in the Medina: an innovation for the Fes Festival

The Fes Festival of World Sacred Music has come up with an innovative idea this year – a Night in the Medina, where you can wander from one concert to another as you please, at various magnificent palaces and monuments.
From 20h00 on Monday 7 June, you can choose one, two or any number of the seven concerts that will take place throughout the medina and beyond. The venues include the Batha Museum, the festival headquarters Dar Pacha Tazi, Dar Mokri, the music conservatory Dar Adiyel and the Ben Danan Synagogue museum in the Mellah. You might prefer Sufi songs from Afghanistan with Ustad Gholam Hossain, Iranian sitar and tombak (drum) with Kiya and Ziya Tabassian, or even Sufi music and dance from Luxor with Les Musiciens du Nil.

There will be a different artist at each venue. You might, for example, like to see the Mongolian Epi playing his ‘horsehead fiddle’ or morin hoor and singing his amazing overtone/undertone chants.
The Festival office has not yet let us know which artist will be at which venue. And admittedly, it’s quite a way from the Ben Danan Synagogue to Dar Adiyel, so careful choosing is required. We’d suggest groupings of venues such as the Synagogue/Batha Museum/Dar Pacha Tazi, or Dar Mokri/Dar Adiyel.

Can’t resist this…

18 03 2010

Just a quickie before flying off. We can’t resist letting you know about this coming concert put on by the Institute Cervantes (Spanish Institute). The bag pipes and mixing desks are coming to town on Monday March the 29th at 7 pm.
Hevia et frères Akkaf is a musical collaboration of popular traditions and new technoligies, fused together to creat this extraordinary repetiore. Combining international jazz, world music (always a broad one!) and moroccan music, it’s got to be worth checking out.
Complex Houria – Monday 29th of March. 7 p.m.

C.V is taking a break

18 03 2010

Culture Vultures is not asleep but on vacation. Rues Jazz festival in Catalunya, Spain is our destination. We probably wont be reporting from it as there is too much fun to be had and we are suffering an administration overdose. Back in a week to harvest more of Fez’ cultural activities. Until then, Ole, inchalah.
